CULPEPPER, Va. (CBSDC) — The widower of a woman shot and killed by a Culpeper police officer earlier this year has been found dead inside of his apartment.
A worker discovered the body of 62-year-old Gary D. Cook shortly before 10:30 a.m. after entering his Culpeper apartment to perform routine maintenance.
Virginia State Police say it does not appear foul play was a factor in his death.
Cook’s remains were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner where an autopsy will be performed Wednesday.
In May, Cook filed a $5.5 million wrongful death lawsuit against former police officer Daniel Harmon-Wright in connection with the Feb. 9 shooting that claimed the life of Patricia Cook.
Prosecutors say Harmon-Wright, a 32-year-old former Marine, used unnecessary lethal force when he shot the woman seven times in a school parking lot.
The former officer entered a not guilty plea to murder charges and is free on bond while awaiting trial in January.
