WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — A person in the District of Columbia has died from West Nile Virus.
The death is the first West Nile related fatality reported in Washington. It comes just one week after neighboring Maryland had its first confirmed fatality related to the virus this year.
Public health workers in the District say one additional resident has been hospitalized with the virus.
The Washington Post reports the number of cases in the area is about the same experienced in previous years.
Virginia has no reported deaths from the mosquito-transmitted disease this year.
Cases of West Nile have been reported nationwide. The Centers for Disease Control says over 700 cases of the virus have been confirmed across 43 states, with at least 27 of those cases resulting in death.
Dr. Richard Besser says people can lower their risk of contracting the disease by using bug repellant and covering up skin with more clothing.
