FALLS CHURCH, Va. (CBSDC) — An 83-year-old woman was attacked by a rabid beaver while swimming in a private lake in northern Virginia Tuesday evening.

The elderly woman was taking a dip in Lake Barcroft around 6 p.m. when the beaver attacked, police say.

A nearby witness managed to subdue the animal using a stick until authorities arrived.

The woman managed to get to shore and was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Animal Control Officers euthanized the beaver which later tested positive for rabies.

The lake is popular for swimming and fishing with Bailey’s Crossroads residents.

Authorities plan to distribute flyers with rabies information in neighborhoods near the attack.
