WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – Ever wonder if the crab cake you’re eating is made from local crab meat?  Wonder no more.

“True Blue,” a new initiative from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), wants crab lovers to know which restaurants are supporting the local market.

It’s an “open secret,” according to the DNR, that many Maryland crab cakes are not made with Maryland — or even American — crabmeat.

“Customers can look at a menu and know right away that they’re getting what they think they’re getting,” says Steve Vilnit, director of Fisheries Marketing for the DNR.

How it works is:  Once a restaurant is signed up, it will receive a ‘True Blue’ logo to show patrons its crab meat is locally certified.
