LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer offered advice to Washington Redskins Robert Griffin III during an interview with LaVar Arrington and Chad Dukes on 106.7 The Fan Thursday afternoon.
Griffin has been drawing comparisons to Beamer’s former quarterback Michael Vick since long before rejuvenating the fading hopes of Redskins fans.
With his lightning-fast speed and strong arm, it was only natural that fans and analysts began measuring Griffin up to the former Madden cover player.
Beamer also sees similarities in their game.
“I think Michael has the ability to create and it’s going to be the same there,” Beamer said with regards to Griffin’s style.
Perhaps it was the Tech coach’s relationship with Vick that he felt comfortable enough to offer advice to Griffin.
“I think you just have to be smart when the time is to get down and when the time is to get out of bounds,” Beamer said. “I think a lot of times in the passing game is where you see guys get hit. Sometimes, that’s going to happen. That’s where Michael got injured the last time is when he was throwing the football. I think you just have to be smart how you play.”
He also thinks Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles may hold the upper hand in the NFC East.
“I do think he can take a team and carry them,” Beamer said with regard to his former quarterback. “You talk about him creating plays, but really he has such a quick delivery and such a strong arm. I think he’s got it all. I think if things stay healthy they’re certainly going to have a chance factor in.”
Griffin and Vick will go head-to-head at FedEx Field on Nov. 18 before a Week 16 rematch on Dec. 23 in Philadelphia.
Sixteenth-ranked Virginia Tech opens their football season Monday night against Georgia Tech at Lane Stadium.
