ALEXANDRIA, Va. (CBSDC) – Police have identified the body of a man who died Monday after causing a head-on collision with a police patrol car in Alexandria.
The deceased man in the crash has been identified as 52-year-old Jeffrey M. Woods of 6008 Brookview Drive in Alexandria.
Franconia Road was partially closed for several hours Monday morning following the fatal car crash accident.
WNEW’s Kevin Patrick reported a fatal that the head-on collision occurred around 3 a.m. after a car swerved into oncoming traffic on Franconia Road, striking a police patrol car.
It took detectives hours to reconstruct the scene of the accident. Police say a patrol car was heading in one direction, when another car coming from the opposite direction turned into oncoming traffic lanes and directly hit the officer’s vehicle.
The vehicle that initiated the incident was a 2006 Infinity, which burst into flames following the collision. Detectives say Woods was trapped inside the car following the crash, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officer was initially trapped in his vehicle until a motorist heard the crash, and went to the scene and assisted the officer in getting out of his police cruiser.
The 30-year-old male officer was able to report the accident himself, but later was transported to the hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
The fatal collision took place between Edison Drive and Gum Street in the Rose Hill area.
