ALEXANDRIA, Va. (CBSDC) - Franconia Road will be partially closed for several hours Monday morning after a fatal car crash involving a police officer.

WNEW’s Kevin Patrick is reporting a fatal head-on collision that occurred around 3 a.m. Monday after a car swerved into oncoming traffic on Franconia Road, striking a police patrol car.

Detectives are on the scene reconstructing the crash. Police say a patrol car was heading in one direction, when another car coming from the opposite direction turned into oncoming traffic lanes and the hit the officer’s car head on.

The vehicle that initiated the incident was an Infinity, which burst into flames following the collision. The driver of the vehicle died.

The police officer struck is a 30-year-old male and was able to report the accident himself.

He was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The fatal collision took place between Edison Drive and Gum Street in the Rose Hill area.
