Friday on the Holden and Danny Show, Ex-Redskins Cornerback Fred Smoot joined the program to break down Thursday’s pre-season opener. Smoot was very impressed with what he saw with the Redskins last night – just not good enough to give them more than six wins this season.

Smoot was very impressed with rookie Quarterback Robert Griffin III, noting that the way he went through his progressions made him look very mature.  Smoot made sure to point out that “[Robert Griffin III] will get better each and every day.”  In comparison, Griffin III looked much more impressive in his short stint last night than Blaine Gabbert ever looked as a rookie in Smoot’s eyes.

Robert Griffin III’s favorite target last night, Wide Receiver Pierre Garcon, also stood out in a major way for Smoot.   Garcon’s improved hands and his ability to create after the ball was in his hands will play very well in this offense and help with the development of Griffin III.  Smoot went as far to say, that if he played fantasy football, he would take Garcon early in any draft after just last night.

Smoot also believes the receiving corps in general has been upgraded, so much so, it reminded him of the Green Bay Packers receivers.  That’s lofty praise from Smoot, as the Packers have the best receiving corps in the league.

On the defensive side of the ball, Smoot said Safety Brandon Meriweather really stood out to him last night.  He was quick to note that the defensive secondary looked so good because the defensive line looked so dominant.

At the end of the day, Smoot said “There should be no expectations with a rookie at quarterback in the National Football League.”  Smoot added to that saying 5-11 or 6-10 would be good for the Redskins this season.
