CAPITOL HEIGHTS (CBSDC) — A second person has died as a result of injuries sustained in a deadly fire that engulfed a duplex in Capitol Heights on Wednesday.

Fifteen-year-old Ricky Cole succumbed to his injuries around 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Cole was taken to the Medstar Washington Hospital Center Burn Unit in extremely critical condition following the fire.

The young man’s niece, a 5-year-old girl, died Wednesday night after she was initially revived by rescuers at the scene.

A 24-year-old man, who was also burned in the blaze, remains in critical condition at the same burn center. He was able to make his way out of the home on his own, but suffered burns on over fifty percent of his body.

He is the father of the young girl who perished in the blaze.

Fire officials believe an overloaded electrical circuit caused the fire at the brick duplex in the 6000 block of Carrington Court.
