WOODBRIDGE, Va. (CBSDC) — Prince William County Police have charged Jasmine Matthews in connection to the accidental shooting death of 4-year-old Kyrell Kyyon McNeill on July 25.
Police say McNeill wandered out of his home and found a gun inside of an unlocked car parked in front of his home. At some point while handling the weapon it discharged, striking him in the head.
A family member rushed outside and called police. McNeill was rushed to a hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Police described the shooting as a tragedy at the time and said a full investigation would be conducted.
That investigation revealed Matthews, who is the boy’s step father, left the gun in another family member’s unsecured vehicle that was parked in front of the child’s home.
After consulting with Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, detectives charged Matthews with cruelty and injuries to children. He has been released on $20,000 unsecured bond.
