WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) — The Washington Nationals claimed shortstop Cesar Izturis off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday.
Izturis, an NL All-Star and Gold Glove winner in 2004, is batting .235 with two homers and 11 RBIs in 57 games this season. He is making $875,000.
Washington also placed utility man Mark DeRosa on the 15-day disabled list because of a left abdominal strain, a move retroactive to Sunday, and designated left-hander Atahualpa Severino for assignment.
The Nationals have 10 days to trade Severino, release him or send him outright to the minors.
