BELTSVILLE, Md. (CBSDC) — Perhaps the days of firefighters rushing to save cats stuck in trees hasn’t passed after all.
A modern twist on that classic story occurred Friday afternoon in Beltsville when a group of people called authorities after hearing kittens crying in distress.
Roughly 40 Firefighters, paramedics and the Technical Rescue Team responded to a business at 12304 Baltimore Avenue to assist in locating the cries.
Two new born kittens, estimated to be just 2 days old, were found in a nearby storm drain. Their mother was nowhere in sight.

After assessing the safety of the drain, including testing air quality, responders were lowered by rope down the drain.
Firefighter Vincent Verdadero came back out of the drain with the two small kittens.
The kittens were turned over of a County Animal Control officer. The county has hundreds of animals currently up for adoption.
