SILVER SPRING, Md. (CBSDC) - The 25th Anniversary of Shark Week is being celebrated in Silver Spring this August by Discovery with the return of a beloved inflatable shark.
Residents have come to love ‘Chompie’, a 446-foot-long inflatable great white shark that now hangs from the Discovery building in downtown Silver Spring.
Discovery Communications first debuted Chompie in 2006, as a new promotional gimmick by the company, serving as a daily reminder that its annually-run televised celebration of sharks was just around the corner.
The celebratory nature of Chompie’s fans can only be explained by his sporadic appearances. The shark who boasts a 200-foot fins-span would not reappear again after his debut until 2010. Discovery also chose not to display him in 2011.
Shark Week begins on The Discovery Channel Sunday, August 12, is now broadcast in over 72 countries and originally aired on July 27, 1987.
