WASHINGTON (CBSDC) - President Obama is in Florida on a two-day campaign and has been informed by his staff of Friday morning’s movie theater shooting that has claimed the lives of 12 people and injured at least 50 others.

The White House said President Obama was informed of the tragedy in Colorado around 5:26 a.m. ET by Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, John Brennan.

President Obama said he was “shocked and saddened” by this “horrific and tragic” shooting.

A spokesperson for the hospital treating the victims of the Aurora, Colorado shooting tells CBS Denver that 9 people are currently in critical condition.

CBS Denver reports that 10 people died in the theater and 2 others died while being treated at the hospital.

Police said they have a suspect in custody — James Holmes — and that explosives were found at the suspect’s home. They said they aren’t sure if there was a second suspect and are continuing to investigate.
