WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — Adam Carriker, Washington Redskins defensive end, joined The Holden & Danny Show Friday to discuss the upcoming season.

Danny, who was flying solo as Holden was on vacation, began the interview discussing the Redskins re-signing the defensive lineman back in March.

“It’s awesome that they showed the confidence in me, and in fact, they reached out to me and wanted to bring me back and asked me if I wanted to come back,” Carriker said. “So when we came to the agreement I was definitely elated.”

Carriker signed a four-year, $20 million contract with $7 million guaranteed, according to The Washington Post, and was acquired from the Rams in 2010 for a fifth and seventh-round pick.

He had career bests in 2011 with 34 tackles 5.5 and sacks.

Going into year three with the Redskins, Carriker said it’s huge that players like nose tackle Barry Cofield, cornerback DeAngelo Hall, outside linebackers Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan and inside linebackers London Fletcher and Perry Riley will return to the system and will be working together for another year.

Danny asked – with those players previously working together as a defensive unit – how is Carriker’s comfort level.

“The more comfortable you are, the less you have to think, the better you’re gonna play and the better you’re gonna be,” Carriker said. “It’s light years of a difference it makes.”

Danny said with Carriker ranking at the top of the list in tackling efficiency over the last three years, referring to a list compiled by Profootball Focus.

“It’s definitely something I take pride in. Tackling is obviously very important, it’s a mentality, it’s a mindset. I mean that guy doesn’t want to go down, he’s getting paid not to go down, it’s my job to get him down so it’s a will and it’s a mindset as to who’s going to win that individual battle each time,” Carriker said.

The list ranked Carriker at No. 2 with 1223 snaps and 47 tackles. Redskins’ defensive tackle Kedric Golston also made the list at number 13 with 1239 snaps and 52 tackles.

“Basically, it’s just getting better at everything – getting more pressure on the quarterback,” Carriker said about what he hopes to add to his game this season.

He also said this year, now that the defensive unit has played with each other, the unit will be more efficient.

“When you know each other that much better, you’re going to be more efficient as the season and as games go along,” Carriker said.

Of course before letting him go, Danny wanted to talk about rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III.

“He has pretty much embraced that role … I think he has accepted it and embraced it and almost put it on himself a little bit. I don’t think he has any problem with that leadership role,” Carriker said.
