RICHMOND, Va. (CBSDC/AP) — Dominion Virginia Power is warning customers about a nationwide scam involving an offer to pay their utility bills through a federal program.

The Richmond-based energy provider said that according to the Better Business Bureau there’s no federal program to pay household bills. And Dominion said that giving personal information such as a Social Security number could lead to identity theft.

Officials say that victims have reported being contacted in person, by phone text message and social media. They were asked to register their Social Security number and bank information and make payments to a fake account number.

Dominion says that some Virginia customers have reported being victims of the scam.

The company says anyone who is contacted should call the police and the Better Business Bureau.
