GAITHERSBURG, Md. (CBSDC) — A flying lesson turned tragic Monday night in Gaithersburg when a plane crash shortly after takeoff claimed the life of one person and injured another.
The single-engine plane crashed near Davis Airport around 7:20 p.m. near the 23600 block of Pocahontas Road.
The man killed in the crash has been identified as flight instructor Frank Schmidt according to All-News 99.1 reporter Heather Curtis.
Another person inside the plane was transported to a local trauma center.
The plane lost power shortly after take-off from the runway, turned on its side and crashed to the ground.
Attempts to reach the crash site were hampered because the plane went down in a heavily wooded area.
Hazmat crews were called to the scene to help control a significant fuel leak.
Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration were called to the scene to assist in the investigation.
