FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (CBSDC/AP) — A Spotsylvania County fire official says it’s a miracle that no one was seriously injured when a storm destroyed a gymnasium and damaged several other buildings.
Spotsylvania County Volunteer Fire Department assistant chief Mark Kuechler says at least 20 people were inside the Cheer Fusion gym when the storm struck Sunday. Seven girls suffered minor injuries from the destruction of the cheerleading and dance school located at 86 Fleming Street in Fredericksburg.
One person reported that a man at the gym suffered a broken leg and woman suffered a broken ankle.
Kuechler tells media outlets that the storm tore the building’s roof off and collapsed the cinder block walls. Strong wind and falling trees damaged several other homes and buildings.
Rescue units responded to a call at about 6 p.m. for the collapse of the gym and a nearby private residence. Debris from the gym blew over to the private residence, covering the home.
A National Weather Service team planned to assess the damage Monday to determine the type of storm that hit.
