WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) — Now that the Supreme Court has upheld President Barack Obama’s health care reform law, the nation’s capital will continue its efforts to implement the law at the local level.

District of Columbia leaders, almost all Democrats, have already moved aggressively to implement the law. A bill creating a health insurance exchange became law last December, and district officials hope to have the exchange fully operational by sometime next year.

On Friday, a D.C. Council committee will consider nominees to the board of the health exchange.

The district already provides Medicaid coverage up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level. City officials have also passed laws allowing residents to stay on their parents’ insurance until age 26 and mandating that 80 percent of insurance premiums be spent on medical care.
