LAUREL, Md. (CBSDC) — Authorities in North Carolina were searching for Darius J. Smotherson who was wanted on murder charges. On Tuesday, The 19-year-old Smotherson was arrested in in Laurel after he was seen getting off a bus on I-95 near Rt. 32.
He was arrested without incident around 7:30 a.m. at a northbound welcome center on the highway.
Smotherson is wanted by the Kannapolis, North Carolina Police Department for a murder that occurred on May 21 in that city.
Maryland State Police were given information from detectives with Kannapolis Police that he may be headed into the Baltimore area on a bust coming from Atlanta. Lookouts were established at locations in Laurel and Baltimore where buses frequently stop.
He was taken into custody without incident and was taken to the Maryland State Police Waterloo Barrack where he is awaiting extradition. Detectives from the Kannapolis Police Department are expected to travel to Maryland to begin the extradition proceedings.
