WASHINGTON (AP) — The cost of a taxicab ride in the District of Columbia is now a little less expensive.

A $1 fuel surcharge on the cost of a ride expired at midnight Wednesday. The new fare structure reduces the cost of a two-mile cab ride by about 12 percent.

The D.C. Taxicab Commission says falling gas prices convinced them to drop the surcharge. Ron Linton, the commission’s chairman, has said the group will continue to track gas prices through the summer and fall. If conditions change, he said the commission “will consider appropriate action.”

The surcharge was imposed in March 2011 and has been extended three times since then.
