WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — Due to the extreme temperatures around the capital region, Metro is allowing riders to carry water onto trains and buses on Wednesday and Thursday.

The transit system typically does not allow food or beverages of any kind in stations, on trains or buses.

The rules will remain relaxed through close of business on Thursday night.

Metro is encouraging passengers who choose to take advantage of the rules to use containers that can be tightly secured. In addition, officials ask passengers to use trash receptacles to dispose of the bottles.

A heat advisory remains in effect throughout the region until 10 p.m. Thursday. Temperatures are expected to flirt with the 100-degree mark over the next 24 hours.

Cooler weather returns to the forecast on Saturday when temperatures are expected to dip back to the mid-80′s.
