RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A two-day summit will convene this week in Richmond to examine the possible link between brain injury and young people in the juvenile justice system.

The summit Wednesday and Thursday is sponsored by the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services and the Brain Injury Association of Virginia.

It will bring together Virginia researchers, state agency stakeholders, and advocacy professionals from several states currently studying this population. Besides Virginia, they include Texas, Nebraska, Utah, and Minnesota.

DRS Commissioner Jim Rothrock says professionals have been looking into how brain injury may be a factor for many young people in the nation’s correctional systems.

The summit is an attempt to better diagnose core problems and treat them accordingly.
