WASHINGTON (AP) — Kwame Brown’s resignation as chairman of the D.C. Council has been certified by the district’s elections board.

The board declared the chairman’s office vacant on Monday. It also set a special election to replace Brown for Nov. 6, the same day as the general election.

Brown, a Democrat, resigned last week after he was charged with lying about his income on bank loan applications. He pleaded guilty on Friday to that charge and to a misdemeanor campaign finance violation.

Councilmember Mary Cheh is serving as acting chair until Wednesday, when the Council will meet to select an interim chair. At-large councilmembers Phil Mendelson and Vincent Orange are angling for that job, and Mendelson has said he intends to run for chairman in the special election.
