ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — A 22-year-old man who drove into a woman and her 8-year-old son, killing the child, has been convicted of manslaughter while driving under the influence.
Authorities say Victor Aldana was drunk when he drove a car into 31-year-old Maria Chavez and her son, Brian Hernandez Chavez, as they walked along Duke Street near Interstate 395 in Alexandria on January 15.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. Chavez broke both her legs and a hip.
Aldana was also convicted Wednesday of maiming, reckless driving and operating a vehicle without a license.
Aldana is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 2. He faces up to 26-and-a-half years in prison.
