LEWISDALE, Md. (CBSDC) — Police say 33-year-old Maria Anna Cruz Lopez accidentally backed over five children in the driveway of her Lewisdale home, resulting in the death of her 8-year-old daughter.
The deceased child has been identified as Natalie Hernandez Cruz.
The woman’s son, 2-year-old Mairanable Cruz-Lopez was also injured the crash. As of Friday afternoon he was listed in stable condition.
An unidentified 6-year-old boy and 7-year-old girl were also listed in stable condition after being involved in the accident.
A fifth child, an unidentified 10-year-old-boy, is in serious condition. Authorities categorized his injuries as life-threatening.
All of the victims were transported to Children’s National Medical Center for treatment.
Authorities believe Cruz Lopez mistakenly pressed the gas pedal instead of the break on her SUV. The car struck the children and continued down the driveway before becoming lodged in the garage.
Drugs and alcohol have been ruled out as factors in the crash. Authorities have not filed charges and are calling the incident a tragic accident.
In an ironic twist, police were at the home, located in the 2200 block Hannon Street, a short time before the accident occurred to settle a dispute between the woman and her landlord. According to authorities, the landlord was planning on evicting the family from the home.
They do not believe the incidents are related.
