BOWIE, Md. (CBSDC/AP) — Prince George’s County police say a Bowie teenager wearing headphones has been struck and killed by a train in the Riverdale area.
Cpl. Clinton Copeland says 17-year-old Mary C. Gaffney apparently did not notice an oncoming CSX freight train while walking on the tracks in the 6100 block of Lafayette Avenue late Wednesday. Copeland says the train hit the teen and she was pronounced dead at a hospital early Thursday.
Gaffney was walking to see her boyfriend at the time she was struck.
The train’s engineer told police he did everything he could to stop the train according to NBC 4.
Copeland says investigators believe the crash was accidental.
