ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — Arlington County police say an officer helped deliver a baby in the backseat of an SUV during rush-hour traffic.
Police say Cpl. Steve Troyano was making a traffic stop in the 5300 block of Columbia Pike about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday when he was flagged down by a frantic woman who said she needed help for her sister. Authorities say Troyano got to the woman in labor and helped her deliver the baby about 10 minutes later.
The baby girl, weighing 6 pounds and 3 ounces, was later taken to a hospital with her mother.
Troyano says that when he realized he had to deliver a baby, his “instincts took over.”
Police say the baby’s family has given the girl the middle name “Stephanie,” in honor of Troyano.
