Jaywalker Facing Firearms Charges After Running From Police
ASPEN HILL, Md. (CBSDC) — Foday Abdulai Gassama was arrested on firearms charges after attempting to flee from police who were going to warn him about jaywalking on Wednesday.
Gassama was one of four people observed by an Montgomery County Police officer who were jaywalking across Bel Pre Road in Aspen Hill around 3:50 p.m. When the officer attempted to stop the subjects to warn them about walking outside of a crosswalk, Gassama fled the scene on foot.
The officer noted the 21-year-old Gassama, who resides in the 4100 block of Garrett Park Road in Silver Spring, was carrying a red and black backpack when he ran away. However, when another officer apprehended him in a residential area nearby the backpack was missing.
Police retraced the man’s route and located the backpack inside of a trash can in front of a home in the 4000 block of Manor Park Court.
Authorities found loaded Jennings 9mm handgun and a magazine with additional ammunition inside the backpack. Two children were playing nearby where the gun was found.
Gassama is facing several firearms-related charges and failing to comply with the lawful order of a police officer. He is currently being held on a $5000 bond.
