General Manager George McPhee of the Washington Capitals announced Monday afternoon that Head Coach Dale Hunter will not be returning to the team for the 2012-2013 season.

McPhee acknowledged that Hunter’s “heart was not in it” and as a result, he will be returning home to his family in Canada.

With no word directly from Hunter’s mouth, McPhee did acknowledge that Hunter believed he taught the players what they needed to win and will now be able to do so with a new coach.

McPhee added that Hunter told him that in their initial meetings before taking over for Bruce Boudreau, there is only one way to play to win and he was going to teach these players how.
