WASHINGTON (CBSDC) - On Wednesday morning, surgeons at Memorial Hermann hospital in Houston made technological history by broadcasting brain surgery live on Twitter and YouTube.
At 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dr. Dong Kim, a neurosurgeon began surgery on a 21-year-old patient to remove a brain tumor. This is the second time surgeons at Memorial Hermann hospital have allowed the internet to view their work; the first time was live broadcast of a heart surgery back in February.
The Operating Room in Memorial Hermann had a colleague of Dr. Kim on-hand during the surgery, equipped with a laptop and a video camera for shots of the surgery, all to be covered on Twitter, TwitPic, YouTube, CoverItLive and Pinterest.
Dr. Kim said the purpose for all the internet coverage is to teach students and help patients.
