Cyclist Dies After Being Hit By Car In Olney

OLNEY, Md. (CBSDC) — Diane Whitman was killed when she was struck by a car while riding her bike in the area of Route 108 and Zion Road in Olney early Thursday morning.

Authorities say the accident occurred around 6:29 a.m.

A preliminary investigation by Montgomery County Police revealed that the 48-year-old Whitman, who lived in Montgomery Village, was riding eastbound on Route 108 when she was hit by a gray 2011 Toyota Camry that was traveling in the same direction.

The driver of that vehicle was identified as 30-year-old Heather Simmons of Damascus.

Whitman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Simmons was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.

When the investigation is complete, the collision reconstruction unit will present their findings to the Maryland State’s Attorney’s Office who will then determine whether charges will be filed in the case. The investigation is expected to take a number of weeks.

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the fatal collision to contact the police at 301-840-2435. Callers may remain anonymous.
