The Washington Capitals will play the New York Rangers in the second round of the 2011-2012 NHL playoffs.  The seventh seeded Caps clinched a spot after defeating the defending Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins 2-1 in overtime last night in game seven of their first round series.  The number one seeded Rangers had to win their last two against the Ottawa Senators to defeat them in seven games on their way to the second round.

This will be the third time in four years the Capitals have played the Rangers in the playoffs as the Capitals have won both series including defeating the Rangers in five games last season.  This will be though the first time the Caps won’t have home ice advantage against the Rangers.

The Caps went 2-2 against the Rangers this season including a 4-1 win at Madison Square Garden to end the season.  Dale Hunter went 2-1 in three games at the helm for the Capitals against the Rangers this season.
