RGIII Is The Fan’s White Whale
If you don’t recall, Robert Griffin III has actually appeared on 106.7 The Fan.
Lavar and Dukes’ producer Robert Bode booked him through the Baylor athletic department back in December, shortly after he won the Heisman Trophy.
But that was a long time ago and well before the Washington Redskins traded up to acquire the number two overall pick in the draft. Heck, the Redskins hadn’t even put a bow on the season yet.
As everyone knows, RG3-to-DC Mania has taken over the past few weeks. It has been every producer’s goal to get him on their show. Baylor contacts have passed the buck to his marketing people who have passed it to his agent. It’s a never ending circle of disappointment.
Today, Matt Valdez and I thought we had him.
This morning, word quickly spread that RGIII was doing some national press for his newly signed deal with Subway and was appearing on a few high-profile programs.
Normally, when these things happen, the promoters have one morning or day with the athlete to do press. Presumably, there was little to no chance of us landing Griffin.
However, I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t at least track down who was in charge of RGIII’s day to see if having him on was even a remote possibility.
Luckily, I already had a contact at Subway public relations. A couple years ago on the afternoon show, we had CJ Spiller on promoting the “pepperoni bust” they made of him shortly before the draft. I immediately fired off a “grasping” email seeing if we could get RGIII on the Junks this morning. Stunningly, I got something right back.
“Hi Drab, good to hear from you. I am copying my colleagues who are handling his schedule today. It’s pretty full but they will see if we can squeeze you in this morning.“
Let me tell you — this never happens. You’ll be lucky to get a response, let alone a maybe.
One of his colleagues, Ross, also wrote back with: “We will work on it and get back to you.”
Valdez and I of course went into a premature celebration thinking we had finally done it! Matt has tirelessly worked to get him on. This would be sweet victory.
After 30 minutes of no response I decided to check back in with Ross to see how his schedule was looking and if Wednesday would work if today wasn’t possible.
“Only today and he is booked solid till 10…sorry Bud!”
And just like that… Poof! RGIII was gone again.
I depressingly asked Ross if we could get him on one of the other shows on The Fan, but I have yet to hear back. That would at least be a small consolation for Matt and I.
So it’s back to square one as we once again try to figure out how to get Griffin on the station.
