United Routs The Red Bulls 4-1 Sunday Night At RFK
The rain was not the only thing that made an appearance Sunday night at RFK as DC United’s offense finally showed what it is capable of doing with a 4-1 beating over arch rival New York Red Bulls. Chris Pontius led United’s effort with a hat trick and Nick DeLeon also contributed by scoring one for the Black and Red.
United started the game on a great note setting the tone with tight man marking up front which led to pressure and no easy passes for the Red Bulls as they tried to build their attack. In the 8th minute that pressure is exactly what led DC’s first goal as Chris Pontius was able to steal the ball away from Thierry Henry in the center of the pitch and Pontius took intiative as he cracked a long distance shot which left New York Keeper Meara with no shot to make a save. Though the Red Bulls were able to make some plays in the mid field their finishing left a lot to be desired and United took advantage of it by scoring two back to back goals within 3 minutes to close out the first half with a 3-0 lead.
United’s second goal in the 32nd minute was all due to a great play by Maicon Santos as he was able to fight off a couple of Red Bulls defenders and sneak a cross through the middle of the box where the Red Bulls mishandled it and Pontius was able to clean up the mess with his second goal of the night. In the 35th minute Nick DeLeon was able to score on a great pass by De Rosario giving United the 3-0 advantage.
In the second half United turned up the offense again and in the 69th minute Pontius was able to dribble through the Red Bulls defense leaving him alone 1-on-1 versus the Red Bulls keeper tucking it past him for his hat trick. In the 71st minute The Red Bulls scored when Thierry Henry was able to blast a free kick past Willis making it a 4-1 game.
DC United has now not lost a game since in six games dating all the way back to their loss to the Galaxy in LA on March 18th. United now has 12 points and continues its home stand against the Houston Dynamo next Saturday at RFK.
