RICHMOND (CBSDC) — Transportation officials in Virginia are proposing a new $1 per month fee for all E-ZPass units regardless of whether or not they are being used.
VDOT wants to begin issuing the monthly charge in July according the Richmond Times Dispatch.
The money collected would be used to pay for the growth of the E-ZPass program as a host of new bridges, tunnels and electronic toll roads are scheduled to come online by the end of the year in the Commonwealth.
The electronic system currently costs $10 million to run each year. Last year E-ZPass accounted for $153.4 million of total toll revenue generated statewide.
VDOT officials previously stated they could cover the cost of the program’s growing pains without imposing higher fees.
Currently, drivers are charged a $25 for the transponder unit in addition to pre-paying $35 in tolls when they first join the program.
