WASHINGTON (AP) — Supporters of budget autonomy for the District of Columbia will be making their case to members of Congress and their staffs.

Activists from the D.C. Voting Rights Coalition will be walking the halls of the Capitol Tuesday morning. They plan to visit dozens of Congressional offices to ask that the district be granted more control over its municipal budget.

California Republican Darrell Issa (EYE-suh), chairman of the committee that oversees the district, drafted a bill last year that would have let the district spend local tax dollars without Congressional approval, among other changes. City leaders rejected it because it included language limiting their ability to fund abortions. Issa has pledged to continue working on a bill that is acceptable to the district.
