Teenager Hit By MARC Train In Gaithersburg

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (CBSDC) - A 17-year-old boy is being treated at Suburban Hospital after he was struck by a train near the MARC Washington Grove station in Gaithersburg.
The teen was walking next to the tracks with earbuds in his ears and listening to music. He did not hear the CSX train blow its whistle and was struck around 8:31 a.m.
The victim remained conscious and alert while rescue personnel attended to him at the scene and transported him to the hospital. The boy suffered serious, but non life-threatening injuries.
Rail traffic was stopped in both directions for two hours as authorities investigated the accident. The CSX rails and the vehicle crossing on Oakmont Avenue were re-opened around 10:30 a.m.
Police urge the public to adhere to the following safety tips:
- Don’t walk along or near train tracks.
- When waiting for a train to approach, always remain alert and stay away from the platform edge or the train tracks.
- When crossing train tracks, cross at a designated crossing point.
- Always obey the flashing lights and lowered crossing gates.
