WASHINGTON (AP) — The final vote tally in a close race for an at-large D.C. Council seat will soon be known.
District of Columbia elections officials will be counting nearly 5,000 absentee and provisional ballots on Friday. The updated vote totals will be announced after 5 p.m.
Councilmember Vincent Orange led challenger Sekou (SAY-koo) Biddle by 543 votes after last Tuesday’s Democratic primary. Orange has not claimed victory, and Biddle has not conceded.
The Board of Elections and Ethics says it received 2,163 absentee ballots from Democratic voters. The board is also preparing to count more than 2,800 provisional ballots, although that total also includes voters from other parties.
A margin of victory of less than 1 percent would trigger an automatic recount. Orange currently leads by just over 1 percent.
