VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (CBSDC/AP) — An emergency shelter set up to house residents displaced after a Navy fighter jet crashed into an apartment complex Friday has been closed by Virginia Beach officials.
In a news release Saturday, the city said it closed the shelter at Birdneck Elementary School after the 26 people who took shelter there found other places to stay.
The shelter opened Friday afternoon after the F18 Hornet malfunctioned and crashed just after takeoff, damaging or destroying 40 apartment units.
Displaced residents were scheduled to meet with the American Red Cross and the Navy on Saturday afternoon.
