Santorum: Might As Well Have Obama Over Romney

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Presidential candidate Rick Santorum on Thursday said Republicans should give President Barack Obama another term if Santorum isn’t the GOP nominee and for a second day compared rival Mitt Romney to an Etch A Sketch toy.

Santorum reiterated an argument he has made before: The former Massachusetts governor is not conservative enough to offer voters a clear choice in the fall election and that only he can provide that contrast.

“You win by giving people a choice,” Santorum said during a campaign stop in Texas. “You win by giving people the opportunity to see a different vision for our country, not someone who’s just going to be a little different than the person in there.”

Santorum added: “If they’re going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk of what may be the Etch A Sketch candidate for the future.”

Santorum was referencing Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom’s comment Wednesday that “everything changes” for the fall campaign. “It’s almost like an Etch A Sketch,” he said on CNN. “You can kind of shake it up and we start all over again.”

The remark reignited criticism of Romney as the type of politician who will say or do anything to win.

Romney, who made no public appearances Thursday, issued a statement expressing disappointment “that Rick Santorum would rather have Barack Obama as president than a Republican.”

“This election is more important than any one person. It is about the future of America,” he said. “Any of the Republicans running would be better than President Obama and his record of failure.”

Rival Newt Gingrich tweeted: “Rick Santorum is dead wrong. Any GOP nominee will be better than Obama.”

During his speech to employees of USAA, a San Antonio-based insurance and financial services firm, Santorum briefly held up an Etch A Sketch and said his positions don’t change like etchings on the toy, which are erased with a shake. He could be seen fiddling with the toy’s knobs in the intervals between questions from audience members.

Addressing reporters afterward, Santorum lit into Romney for saying “I’m going to run as a conservative.”

“He didn’t say ‘I am a conservative.’ He said ‘I’m going to run as a conservative.’ So what do you do, you just sort of decide what you’re going to be for the elections?” Santorum asked. “No one can accuse me of that. People say, ‘Well, you can’t win because of that.’ No, I will win because of it.”

Santorum said his brand of political authenticity will play well in Texas because “people are looking for someone who is real, someone they can relate to, not someone who can get in front of an audience and say whatever they want.”

The Texas primary has been pushed to May 29 because of litigation over redistricting maps drawn by the Republican-dominated state Legislature. Santorum said he expects to win Saturday’s primary in Louisiana and added, “The race will not be over when Texas comes around.”

“You’ll have the opportunity here, in the state of Texas, to speak very loudly about what kind of leader you want in this country,” he said.

Santorum said he speaks with Texas Gov. Rick Perry before scheduled campaign stops in the state. Perry sought the GOP nomination but left the race in January and endorsed former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

“This is an important state for us,” Santorum said. “I’ve already spent a lot of time, I’ve already done a lot of campaign events in Texas. More than anybody else, I suspect.”

Rick, That is very uncool. Shame on you. Get out of the race.

    • Brewboy

No, let him stay in. I want a brokered convention. May be then we can get some one that will be a real contrast to Obama. Let the race go on. Let’s draft the likes of a Paul Ryan or some one that has real core values that we can understand and believe in.

      • Mike

You are even more out of touch with reality than Santorum, Brewboy.

      • Mike

And I am even more out of touch with reality than myself, who is currently sitting next to me, typing on a typewriter with his feet!

      • CalGTR

The reality is that Romney will be the nominee, even if he somehow failed to reach 1144 (he’ll make it to 1144 quite easily). In order to be considered for nomination, a candidate must have won a plurality of votes in at least 5 states. Since Ryan, Palin, or whoever people might want to draft won’t have those wins, they have no opportunity. The nominee will be one of the folks already running, and at the very least Mitt will have a sizable lead on everyone else, and will find the few extra delegates he needs, even if he doesn’t hit 1144. But, it’s all moot, because Mitt will easily get the 1144, and everyone knows it. That ‘s why you’re seeing Jeb Bush and DeMint and others start to call for this thing to wrap up. If the race were closer we could continue on, but it’s not.

      • Patrick

Brewboy, you already had a contrast to Obama. You already had someone with real core values (and a record to prove it). The establishment pushed him out and the media tried to ignore him….his name was Ron Paul.

      • dwalk

You cannot win with a far right winger. Half of the population is now dependent upon government payroll, government entitlements and/or government unemployment. You have to take to the middle or you are just waisting your time trying to get into office.
It is not that a large portion of the above citizens won’t or don’t want a change, they are just not in any posiition to take a chance on the only income and support they have – which comes from government. You have to obtain the office , then gradually make the changes required to restore the economy and put us back on solid fiscal ground.
Extreme changes, all at once will only scare those who have no choice on what they subsiding on.

      • jschm

Romney is the only one who can attract independents. And if the conservatives don’t vote for him, then it is there fault Obama wins.

      • Doug

Cal, Research, that is the answer. You do not understand the process at all. We will not have a brokered convention as it is not possible with the new GOP rules. We will have what is called an open convention if none of the candidates reach that migical 1144 mark. In an open convention, anyone can join the race as a nominee, however, it will not matter in my opinion, as Paul is going to enter the convention with 1144 + supporters signed up as delegates. He has had his supporters working hard at getting these spots, even if they said they were for Romney to get the spots. Paul supporters are loyal and when noone gets the 1144 on the first round of votes, all delegates are freed to vote their conscience, Paul supporters will not waiver. It could be a surprising election this go around.

      • fred

You might want to check the GOP rules about brokered conventions, I beleive that you had to win five state primary races in order to be the nominee. I liked Santorum, until today….

      • StopSellingLies

Unelected officials took over Washington and the media after the coup and cover up. Even most of the comments online are financed with your tax dollars. Big brother is trying to create the perception of public opinion while burying the truth. They think you can’t handle the truth. Fact of the matter is we have no democracy, president, and freedom of press is an illusion.

Our next election is shaping up to be as big of a sham as the last. Do you know why Sarah Palin’s bus tour was really canceled? Do you know why she stayed 30 miles away from the second debate and chose the death of Steve Jobs to announce that she’s not running? Know what leaked out? Sarah Palin and Cain aren’t in the race for the same reason, the truth leaked out.

Search PalinsDirtyLittleSecret for the biggest cover up in world history before it disappears forever much like me.

If Rick is drawing boobs on his new toy, he must be burned at the stake. It’s the Lord’s will, you know. Just ask the commenter with a masters in the old time religion from Preacher Bob’s Bible Tech & Agricultural.

    • Jim-in-Overland-Park

@McBain: Santorum is DONE. Agree 101% with you. Santorum needs to quit TODAY.

    • Chris

Rick, you just lost my vote!

    • Jon

Proof that Santorum will say anything to help foster his political ambitions. He is an embrassment to the party, himself, his family, his country, and the Lord.

      • Nina

Agree ! And he is no Ronald Reagan….

    • ItsJo

Your post is right- Santorum is now, embarassing himself. Does he NOT think about the ’08 video wherein he was praising the Republican Conservative-Romney? I am from Pa., but looked into Rick’s voting record, and that “we sometimes have to work with a team” remark he made in the past, and the video
of his Romney remarks, and it’s turned me off! Everyone who WANTS Obama OUT, better join together, instead of this divisiveness, and put the one who can actually BEAT Obama. That would be Romeny, as the Dems Want Santorum, as they know he can’t Beat Obama. Step aside, Santorum, Gingrich And Paul, in an effort to actually WIN for our nation, against Obama.

    • oraclepundit

That’s the Rick Santorum I know… it was inevitable.

    • Truth teller

Electing Rick will be the same as electing Osama Bin Laden.. Women will loose all rights & become slaves.. Religious law will abolish most every one’s rights.. Dark CLoud will hover over America ..

      • Tony Craig

Obviously if Romney becomes President Santorum cannot campaign to be President in 4 more years. He would have to wait 8 years. If Obama wins Santorum can try his luck again in 4 more years. Why is nobody calling him on this.

    • Morpheus

Yeah, Rick Santorum who felt sick at hearing JFK’s acceptance speech, Rick Santorum who feels that God means for him to elected, something which surprisingly even Romney isn’t doing. Rick should quit, he can’t beat Romney, who knows all the right issues to take to the general, whether everyone likes it or not.

  • Adrian Ludwig

Dude, Rick, It’s over man. We don’t want you in the white house right now, stop it, stop it now. You did a good job, we know who you are, save face, and stop the madness, help unite the party. It’s that simple. That-is-all.

    • JP

Can’t believe he said all of this. I once had a lot of respect for the guy. This is sad to watch him self destruct but to try and divide conservatives. Taboo!

      • Abe

        AGREE!!!!!

      • Perspective

        Agree also

Totally agree! Time for Rick to go home.

    • beagal

      I totally agree!!

I’ll forth that! Time to go Rick before you make yourself a complete pariah for the rest of your live.

    • http://facebuds.wordpress.com shorecastmedia

This is almost exactly what I just wrote to him! I suggest that every one who reads the article above goes to his website RickSantorum.com – go to Contact – and WRITE how you feel.

I just did that, every one should go there and write him NOW.

      • Judy Hopson

I did write early this morning. I have called my Republican governor’s office, my state representative, Senator, Leader Boehner, Mitch McConnell and the RNC. First and foremost, I am a Romney supporter. However, this comment goes beyond a dig at the opppostition because it reflects on Romney supporters. It is a gift for the dems and a problem for the Republican party overall. Etch A Sketch is one thing but this is beyond the pale. The goal is to defeat Obama at all cost and he has given the opposition a gift. I respect Newt Gingrich’s comments because he knows this is a terrible mistake and he is no fan of Mitt.

      • Bobbi

        On my way there.

  • Jeremy

HA HA–Santorum is losing his mind.

    • TheRealKingMax

And you’ll keep him company, eh, Jeremy?

      • TheRealKingMax

Just kidding… I’ll say anything and vote for anybody when I’m high!

  • John Driskill

Even Your Smile Is IDIOTIC – Much less your “STATEMENT” :) :) :)

  • The West Is Red

This campaign has obviously been hard on Santorum. If he cannot handle campaign pressure, he’s probably not up to be POTUS. You went over the line with that kind of comment, Rick.

  • JoeB08

I have been a Santorum supporter, but his wheels seem to have come off this week, along with his common sense. . .so I’m looking hard at Romney and I suspect I will support him. He seems to be the only “grown-up” left in the race.

    • ccr

JoeB…………..you are so right! The wheels have come off. His remarks are erratic, childish, petty, disloyal to the GOP. Santorum seems to be in it for JUST HIMSELF!

Santorum is embarrassing! I feel for his children!!!

      • Jim

Could not say it better. I was waiting to see what would happen, this was a suprise. I expect these people to take things personally, but you dont want them saying stuff like this in public. This is not presidential. This indicates that Santorum will Vote for Obama if he doesnt win the primary. Now is that what we want? I would vote for a tin can before I would vote for Obama. If rick doesnt get that, what kind of teammate would he be?

This scorched earth policy is crazy. If you dont see this for what it is, you arent much good to the team.

      • ccr

WHOOPS! I meant to say “Romney” not “Santorum

    • CalGTR

Definitely give Mitt another look. You may not like all of his past decisions, but he’s come along nicely as a conservative and despite what many say about him, he is a man of integrity and he will keep his campaign promises. You will not see Mitt pull any bait-and-switch either in the general campaign or in the White House. Heck, if Jim DeMint can be “excited” about the possibility of a Romney presidency, I think most conservatives ought to be able to get to that same place at some point.

    • David J

I agree. I’ve followed Romney via Google Alerts every day for four years and have been thoroughly impressed with this guy. The negative propaganda on him is greatly undeserved. He inspires and leads. People have never been sorry they hired him. He’s been strengthened by all his “trials of fire.” He’ll make one of the best Presidents in history, for love of country and to prove his critics wrong.

      • David J

Everyone on this website is now infected with a V*rus on their F*ing comp*ters! HAHAHAHAHAHA

        Giuliani 2047!

Romney is a good fiscal conservative. This was posted today.
        Please read it.

      • Dan Johnson

        Well said.

      • http://facebuds.wordpress.com shorecastmedia

I completely agree with David J – Romney will make one of the best Presidents in history —- and he will undo a lot of the damage Obama has done to our country.

Now everyone please go to RickSantorum.com and tell him he’s an idiot and needs to get out of the race immediately. I just did that myself!!!

The Republican Party needs all the money they can for the General Election and they’re spending a lot to go up against the traitor Santorum.

      • Evelyn B.

For Rick to back Obama for another term because he’s loosing the primary is priceless. If I lived in his state, I would never vote for him again for backing Obama in a time of desperation. The time is to unite, not divide. You nailed it David J. I agree with you completely.

    • rosalind

      I totally agree………..

      • Dan Spot

Me too, 100%. Romney brings the kind of no-nonsense business perspective this country needs. We are getting too wrapped up in so-called values discussions. Heck today’s “conversatives” are yesterday’s “liberals”, so it’s really just a slippery slope.

I’m looking forward to a Romney presidency built on the same principles he used to do LBOs, split up companies, and create tons of financial services jobs (albeit in the Caribbean, but who doesn’t want to go to Bermuda to work, mon!)

  • Dan

Okay, now Rick is just being an a$$. It’s time for this loser to get out and let someone who can actually beat Obama take charge.

    Rick, desperation NEVER wins.

    • TheRealKingMax

      UNLESS you’re a Democrat candidate.

    • Vicky Bevis

Yes, having lived in Pa. for 30+ years before retirement ( to another, CHEAPER, State) his time in Congress showed us that he wasn’t “Congressional Material,” much less Presidential. Personally I believe the ONLY reason he was able to run was due to losing Sen. Heinz, who might, had he lived, have been terrific Presidential Material.

Face it: no one living can be all things to all people. The office of the Presidency is so vastly complicated compared to when our country was formed, that voting for a person for one or two reasons is detrimental to our best interests. Our biggest problems should be paramount as to whom we chose, not some very small portions of our society such as social issues, i.e. abortion, gay marriage, creationism, et al. Frankly, its’ importance is a diversion away from our many & serious issues that MUST be dealt with if we are to remain the leader of the Free World, not some “has run,” which we are heading towards at Warp Speed.

  • Karl Marx

So, Jeb Bush endorses Romeny and Rick Santorum endorses Obama.

    Hmmmm…………..

    • TheRealKingMax

And Rosie O’Donnell lost her series on the Ophrah network.

Yep, I smell a conspiracy here.

Only thing dumber than Santorum are those who vote for him. The circular firing squad that the Republican primary has become is going to wind up reelecting Obama. Sad……

    • pstein

If the GOP actually had a candidate that was able to go 24 hours without a major gaf, perhaps the GOP would have a chance. Sure wish we had GWB back. He would fix everything…permanently this time.

did you clowns even read everything he said? or is your attention span too short?

    • Rockin the casba

Yes it’s right up there in the article, he would rather vote for the other guy who he knows where he stands, instead of an etch a sketch candidate where you don’t know where he stands, point is that the etch a sketch would get a vote over Obama from most Republicans, so Rick is pulling a dixie chick maneuver in not knowing his constituency.

    • CalGTR

First of all, at this stage of the campaign, with one candidate so far out in front, the other guys generally keep their fire pointed at the opposition party candidate, not the obvious future nominee of your own party. Second, there are a TON of very important ways that Romney differs from Obama, although at a point earlier in the campaign I can understand Santorum trying this line of attack. And third, I don’t care how much you want to win, or what you think of the other candidate, you don’t tell the world that you’d rather see Obama keep his job than let someone from your own party take the job. There’s way too much at risk this time around. Permanent Obamacare if Obama wins, unless we’re saved by the Supreme Court. And, speaking of the supreme court, that court is very likely to change in a very bad way if Obama is allowed to make the next picks. And I haven’t even mentioned our spending and debt problems that HAVE to be fixed now. So, yes, I and everyone else (presumably) read all of what Santorum had to say, and we’ve come to the rightful conclusion that Santorum has crossed the line in a serious way – one that will likely cost him within the GOP not only for this campaign, but in future races.
