Fairfax County Teacher Placed On Leave For Alleged Racist Remarks

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (CBSDC) — An English teacher at George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church, Va. has been placed on paid administrative leave All-News 99.1 WNEW has confirmed.

Controversy arose last week after 14-year-old Jordan Shumate, an African American student at the school, claimed veteran teacher Marilyn Bart instructed him to read a Langston Hughes poem “blacker” as he recited it to the freshman English class.

Bart allegedly also asked the student why black people like grape soda and rap music.

He felt he was singled out due to his race.

School officials said they were taking the investigation into Shumate’s allegations seriously.

Marshall principal Jay Pearson met with the student’s parents last Friday to discuss the matter.

WNEW previously reported Bart planned to retire at the end of the school year prior to the incident.
