NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (CBSDC/AP) — Low-cost carrier PeoplExpress Airlines Inc. says it aims to start flying by late summer.
The company headquartered at Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport said it filed its application Monday with the U.S. Department of Transportation to conduct interstate air transportation, and hopes the agency will approve it quickly.
The airline said in its application that it intends to provide service in markets that lack non-stop service, or are being underserved by current carriers.
Airline President Mike Morisi said in a release that Orlando, Pittsburgh, Providence and West Palm Beach are to be included in the airline’s initial destinations.
In addition to federal approval, PeoplExpress Airlines also needs to secure financing.
The airline first announced its comeback plans in February.
