GOP Senator Criticizes Gingrich On Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (AP) — One of the Republican Party’s leading lawmakers on national security is criticizing GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich’s contention that the U.S. mission in Afghanistan may not be feasible.
Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said Gingrich’s comments that the operation may not be “doable” are a disservice to the top commander in Afghanistan, Marine Gen. John Allen, who is executing a plan to drawdown American troops.
Graham told reporters Thursday that he wants troops to come home based on sound military strategy, not politicians who face a tough campaign and are trying to create a headline.
President Barack Obama has instructed Allen to cut the number of U.S. troops from today’s total of 90,000 to 68,000 by the end of September.
