RICHMOND, Va. (CBSDC/AP) — Virginia Commonwealth is heading west in hopes of starting another run going in the NCAA tournament.
The Rams (28-6) were made a No. 12 seed and will travel to Portland, Ore., to play fifth-seeded Wichita State (27-5) in the second round. The game is slated for Thursday in the South region.
VCU, led by third-year coach Shaka Smart, earned its berth this season by winning the Colonial Athletic Association tournament. A year ago, the Rams were one of the last teams included in the field and had to play in the first round in Dayton, Ohio.
VCU dispatched five BCS-conference teams during an historic run to the Final Four in Houston where they were ousted by Butler.
The Shockers are an at-large entry after losing in the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament.
