CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBSDC/AP) — Virginia’s first NCAA tournament appearance since 2007 will begin in Omaha, Neb., against Florida.
The Cavaliers (22-9) are a No. 10 seed and will play the seventh-seeded Gators in the second round of the West region. The game will pit the high-scoring offense run by Florida against Virginia’s defense, one of the stingiest in the country.
Florida (23-10), seeded seventh, lost to Kentucky in the semifinals of the Southeastern Conference tournament.
Virginia has battled injuries and attrition all season and has lost six of its last 10 games along the way.
The Cavaliers lost to North Carolina State 67-64 in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament on Friday. Third-year coach Tony Bennett’s team finished the season with only seven healthy scholarship players.
