VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — A Virginia Beach officer’s lawyer is blaming side effects from an antibiotic for his client’s attack on two firefighters.

Moody E. Stallings Jr. tells media outlets that 23-year-old Bradley Colas began hallucinating and hearing voices shortly after he began taking Biaxin for a respiratory infection.

Stallings says Colas stopped taking the antibiotic after six doses but it was too late.

According to the lawyer, Colas said he had to go to Philadelphia to see Jesus and began driving north on Sunday.

State police say Colas crashed his car into a tree in Hallwood about 6:42 a.m. Sunday. The firefighters were stabbed as they treated his injuries.

Stallings says Colas thought the firefighters were demons.
