UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (CBSDC/AP) — Prince George’s County could be the next jurisdiction in line in the Washington area to add a disposable bag tax.

The county’s House delegation voted Friday to support a bill that would allow county leaders to impose a bag fee similar to the ones in effect in the nation’s capital and Montgomery County. Prince George’s County requires permission from the General Assembly to implement new taxes.

If passed by the General Assembly, the bill would allow the county to charge shoppers 5 cents for each disposable plastic or paper bag they receive.

The county Council and County Executive Rushern Baker also support the bill.

Montgomery County’s bag tax began in January and has raised $154,000 in that amount of time. The tax took effect in the District of Columbia in January 2010.
