WASHINGTON (AP) — Metro has created a new email and text message alert system designed to provide customers with the latest information about planned service changes and delays.

The transit agency says the system introduced on Tuesday, called “MetroAlerts,” allows bus passengers to receive alerts and advisories for things like route-specific delays, detours and schedule changes.

Bus delay information will be sent Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Metro also says the new system will allow rail passengers to receive longer advisories regarding service changes and upcoming track work. Metro’s previous email only alert system was limited to 140-character messages.
