WASHINGTON (CBSDC) –
UPDATE: The Fire is now under control and some firefighters are starting to leave the scene.
The Office of DC Public Schools released the following statement
“This afternoon, the roof at Anacostia High School caught on fire. Students were immediately evacuated and all students are safe. DC FEMS have contained the fire. School has been dismissed. After school activities have also been cancelled. The basketball game scheduled for tonight at Ballou High School will still be held. Once the school building has been fully evaluated, we will make an announcement about students returning to school on Tuesday.”
There was a fire at a local high school and two firefighters were hurt in action.
The roof of Anacostia High School caught fire today, and the D.C. Fire Department says two of its own are hurt, one the result of falling through that roof while combating the flames. The severity of the injury is unclear at this time.
The fire was reported to the fire department around noon, and students and teachers have since been evacuated from the burning building.
Smoke can still be seen from miles around.
WNEW’s Kevin Rincon is on the scene and will have an update shortly.
